| | 1/11/2008 | Daniel Schustow, Clive Helen and Killian Doyle from Bandon Grammar School in County Cork won first place in the special awards category funded by Road Safety Authority at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition on 11th January 2008. Their project titled Limiting Deaths on Our Roads. The Development of an Automatically, Wirelessly Controlled Speed Limiter was mentored by Dr. Marcin Cychowski from the Technologies for Embedded Computing (TEC) Centre in CIT. Students Daniel Schustow, Clive Helen and Killian Doyle chose this topic having discovered the shocking reality of road fatality statistics throughout the world and the enormity of the problem. The project consisted of a thorough research of the danger and effect of speeding, along with the motive behind such behaviour. Following this they presented the Automatic Wireless Speed Control (AWSC) system which automatically prevents a car from travelling above the recommended speed limit at various locations such as dangerous junctions in urban and rural areas, residential areas or any other hazardous driving locations. Finally an integrated study comparing current speed calming techniques with AWSC was carried out outlining the benefits of adopting this new system over traditional methods. More specifically, the students found that the AWSC system reduced the speed by 28% on average which translated into the reduction of stopping distance by almost 50%. Daniel Schustow and Killian Doyle are the first transition-year students who participated in the TEC Centre Outreach Programme in October 2007. | | Michael Rowland, Director of Road Safety, Education and Research from the RSA presents the Road Safety Award to students Daniel Schustow, Clive Helen and Killian Doyle from Grammar School, County Cork | 11th January 2008 | | | 8/11/2009 |

Nine Irish companies attended and represented a cross-section of TEC Centre clients, ranging from small start-ups and indigenous SME’s through to multinational companies. Several Enterprise Ireland staff also attended in addition to the CIT Technology Transfer Office. The TEC Centre, based in the Nimbus Centre, is funded by Enterprise Ireland as part of the ARE (Applied Research Enhancement) programme. The TEC Centre is the primary industry interface of the Nimbus Centre. The Centre’s main objective is to create a one-stop-facility for Industry R&D support in the region. This is being achieved by communicating state-of-the-art in research to industry, creating partnership activities, engaging researchers in industry relevant initiatives and providing effective prototyping facilities. The main areas of interest include wireless systems, wireless sensor networks, miniaturised hardware, software development and intelligent user interfaces The Industry Open day focused on developing an industry relevant applied research strategy for the TEC Centre over the period 2011-2014. Companies were also invited to provide feedback on the operational performance of the TEC Centre, the strategic focus of the Centre, the extent of industrial collaborations and its impact on industry and emerging market opportunities for companies. The Open Day also featured an extensive poster session and demonstrations of active research projects underway in the Centre.
The Open day was viewed very positively by all participants as a means of facilitating an industry-led strategy for the Centre, offering a deeper understanding of the capabilities of the Centre and promoting the continuing interaction between industry and applied research teams.
